Join Trend Union’s Philip Fimmano and design expert David Clark for another inspiring seminar in Australia this January! This not-to-be-missed in-person session will look at the influence of gender identities on society and fashion before analysing the contemporary Arts & Crafts movement, both from a local and a global perspective. Topics covered include: socio-cultural macro trends, fashion, interiors, design, textiles, colours and materials.

PROGRAMME

GENDERING: Spring / Summer 2023 Fashion, Colours & Culture - presented by Philip Fimmano

The current gender movement is refining categories all the time, adding new notions, symbols, flags and words on a regular basis. The pronouns shift, trying to become as neutral as our languages permit, such as they/them and the more abstract ey/eir. With these gender-defining archetypes come clothes that are shared and exchanged, inspired and enhanced, from simple sweats to historic costumes and from worker’s clothes to excessive drag looks. An exciting period lays before us and might dominate fashion for the decades to come. As such, this trend presentation is valuable for the long haul. Within a reliable wardrobe, fluidity is obtained and will be expressed through the return of styling, where everyone chooses personal ways to pull and layer clothes together and adorn them with hats, belts, suspenders, ties and handkerchiefs, as well as corsets. This culminates in a fluidity of colours, from non-descript gender neutrals to elegant greys and elemental outdoor hues, starting with babyish pastels and lightly-tinted neutrals, but also brighter ranges and ultra-brights for dressing up. Fluidity and harmony go hand in hand, searching for a beautiful balance in our clothes and culture. EXPLORE!

FEDERATION HIJACKED: Arts & Crafts in Australia & the New Socialist Aesthetic

David Clark takes a detailed look at the history of Arts & Crafts in Australia, analysing the Federation style’s disruption since World War I and questioning what could have been in the decades that followed. David will also highlight key players from the contemporary Australian design movement, drawing upon Arts & Crafts’ socialist philosophy and investigating similar parallels with the new age in which we live.

NEWS FROM NOWHERE: 2023 Interiors, Materials & Colours - presented by Philip Fimmano

We are pleased to present our latest trend research for Home, Interiors, Materials and Colours. Included in this session is an in-depth look at trends from the 2021 Salone del Mobile in Milan, where we gathered highlights onsite and confirmed the continuation of long-term trends beyond the pandemic. In the keynote, NEWS FROM NOWHERE, Philip Fimmano will explore the slowness of craft processes gives design its nobility and depth. Tomorrow’s objects and textiles should be scrutinised for the possibilities of refined detailing and finishing – like braiding, basket weaving, engraving, painting, lace making, embroideries and more. This holistic approach to living has become a sophisticated design direction for our times, where the functions of rooms are shifting, demanding totally new plans for the future; a nucleus society with more room for family and friends and less space for solitude, with a focus on cooking and learning, playing and reading, baking and bingeing... Living rooms will become living kitchens, bedrooms will become junior suites and dining rooms will become libraries to study and connect, while gardens and balconies become coveted, adding an extra room to the home. Extending the perspective of even the smallest space.
